About the Centre
In the fall of 2025, UPEI will welcome its first cohort of medical students and offer a regional campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland to meet the needs of Islanders from tip to tip.
A large part of the training for these students will be through experiential education in the form of simulations, and 1.5 floors of the new CLSC facility will offer the space, expert staff and resources to facilitate this.
In addition, as a collaborative space, the CLSC will have the capacity to accommodate the simulation requirements for other healthcare professional programs and facilities across the Island.
The CLSC will provide simulation pedagogy in two main areas:
Standardized Patient Program. Trained Standardized Patients (SPs) provide experience to developing healthcare professionals though physical exam practice, as well conversations to establish rapport, take histories, triage, and diagnose, deliver health education and guidance, deliver unwelcome news, or inform of unanticipated outcomes.
High-Fidelity Simulation. The type of simulation reproduces patient scenarios to an elevated level of realism including physical, environmental, and psychological components. This type of simulation often involves sophisticated mannequins, and communication systems to replicate every aspect of the scenario.
The integration of simulation in healthcare education has been found to:
- Enhance communication skills,
- Enhance collaboration with members of interdisciplinary teams,
- Enhance clinical competence,
- Reduce health care costs through improvement of the medical provider’s competencies,
- Improve patient safety through a reduction of errors in medical procedures, and improve
patient outcomes.
Simulation is a generic term that refers to the representation of real-world processes and situations to achieve educational goals through experiential learning.
Clinical simulations create guided experiences which replicate dynamic, health situations in a safe and reliable environment, allowing learners to practice repeatedly, and acquire essential clinical skills through intentional, interactive practice.
