Memorial University Faculty of Medicine Learners

About the Program

The Anatomical Gift Program is housed within the UPEI Faculty of Medicine and forms an integral support for the education of medical learners. The purpose of this program is not only to accept body donations for the advancement of medical knowledge, but also to teach respect and empathy for the human body and life, fostering professionalism in healthcare providers.

Selfless donation by donors to the Anatomical Gift program contributes to the invaluable teaching of essential skills in the medical and health sciences. The program allows medical students and professionals to gain direct, tactile experience with human anatomy, which is crucial for understanding how the body is structured and how organs relate to each other.

We recognize the magnitude of the contributions of our donors and their loved ones when enrolling in the program. We greatly respect and value these gifts and strive to honour them by ensuring their contributions help build a legacy of generosity and quality healthcare education. As the custodians of the donations, our team ensures that the dignity, anonymity, and confidentiality of our donors is protected.

Why Donate?

An anatomical gift is the ultimate gift, and it is treated with gratitude and respect. There are many reasons why one might choose to enroll as a donor.

Medical Education:

The education learners obtain from specimens cannot be replicated by textbooks or videos. Hands-on anatomical training is key for learners to develop essential knowledge about the human body.

Donors provide the gift of teaching to learners, helping them learn how to develop life-saving skills with compassion.

Legacy:

Donors’ generosity lives on for future generations, shaping improvements in health care and inspiring others to do the same.

Faculty, staff and learners are all acutely aware of the privilege they have in working with a human body. They maintain a professional conduct that upholds the dignity of donors and handle all human remains with respect.

Families may also find comfort in knowing the lasting impact left by donors in shaping medical education and training skilled practitioners.
