Hi Everyone,
As summer begins to wind down, I’m pleased to share an update on the important work underway to build UPEI’s future medical education programs.
Our work on the accreditation of undergraduate medical education is entering a critical stage. Six workstreams are finalizing the documentation required for accreditation of a future UPEI Faculty of Medicine, with writing targeted for completion by September 30. A virtual mock review will take place this fall, offering an important opportunity to test our readiness and strengthen the submission before it is formally filed with the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools in January 2027.
We have also reached an important milestone in postgraduate medical education. UPEI has submitted its application for institutional accreditation, with a decision expected later this fall. Planning is underway for future Family Medicine and Integrated Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine residency programs, while discussions with Memorial continue on potential Royal College residency training opportunities.
Another accreditation milestone is worth celebrating. Our Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre, located within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Centre, has received provisional two-year accreditation. This places PEI’s CLSC among only a few accredited simulation centres in Canada and recognizes the quality of the Centre, its people, programs, and approach to simulation-based education.
And, of course, a new academic year brings another reason to celebrate. We wish all our first- and second-year medical learners at Memorial University’s PEI Regional Campus in PEI a successful year ahead. Having two cohorts of PEI medical learners together in the building is tremendously exciting and adds even more energy and purpose to our growing medical education community.
