Distributed Medical Education
Distributed Medical Education (DME) refers to medical education outside of urban academic centers. Prince Edward Island is mainly rural, with most sites being ‘distributed’. DME is a hallmark of Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine, highlighting the communities served by the Faculty of Medicine (FoM).
History of DME
Traditionally medical education was delivered in academic settings, but for a number of reasons, including the adoption of social accountability, medical education is now being delivered within the populations that are being served, including rural, remote and urban communities. In this way we can reach underserved populations and be more inclusive.
