Standardized Patient Program

The Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre’s Standardized Patient Program (SPP) supports experiential learning for healthcare students and professionals through human simulation in a safe, standardized environment.

In the SPP, Standardized Patients (SPs) are trained by our SP Educators to portray a patient’s clinical situation, history, and emotional state with accuracy and empathy. These encounters provide learners with consistent, repeatable experiences that help them practice patient-centred care and develop clinical confidence.

The program also includes specialized Standardized Patients. Pediatric SPs allow learners to interact with children in a clinical exam setting. Teaching SPs to share their own health histories in student encounters involves discussions around symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and impact on life. Teaching Associates include a small subset of individuals trained to guide learners during sensitive examinations (e.g., breast, pelvic, and prostate exams).
